Logwood Purple Raffia
This is bundle of Besalampy Extra (BEX) grade, Madagascan raffia has been dyed with the AWESOME natural dye, logwood.
The Haematoxylum campechianum, bloodwood or the Logwood tree is native to mexico, and now also grows in central america. Its wood-chips contain hematoxylin which was historically used for dyeing fabric. In the 17th century, logwood cutters were associated with pirates!
What makes it so interesting is that it changes colour under different pH conditions- like cabbage does. At a neutral pH it is a horrible brown grey colour blah! But, is purple when in alkaline conditions and yellow-reddy coloured in acidic conditions. Sooo cool!
